The new SAT Essay Prompts are longer and more challenging than before. You are now asked to read a persuasive passage and analyze the author’s argument. You must explain how the author builds this argument with evidence, reasoning, and other persuasive elements. The passage will be from a published article that was written for a broad audience.
The College Board is slowly — very slowly! — implementing computer-based testing, but the vast majority of test-takers will work without a screen or keyboard. If you generally do well on in-class writing assignments, you should probably take a crack at the SAT essay. If you freeze when you’re given a timed essay, consider opting out.
An SAT essay based on a longer passage with more detail and a constrained set of acceptable response options would likely result in written works that are much more amenable to machine scoring than the current essays.
